The historic property located on the ground floor at 350 East Broad, now home to Zombie Coffee and Donuts, has been a center of vibrant downtown culture and renewal for decades. The space has been home to several occupancies and experienced multiple renovations, serving retail, restaurant, and housing needs. The goal of the tenant, Zombie Coffee and Donuts, and the architectural team at Armentrout Matheny Thurmond was to eliminate years of accumulated, often confusing and incongruous construction methods, and present the new tenant and Athens community with a modern café that had clear historical ties to the buildings origins.
By creating a design which removed the clutter of previous remodels which was obscuring or destroying previous generations of work, AMT was able to highlight the more salient portions of the original building, adding elements that placed the current renovation firmly in a modern context. The existing wood flooring was preserved where possible, the existing metal ceiling was repaired and repainted. Because of the investment made by the tenant to truly rehabilitate the space, the historic building was able to house a contemporary establishment while retaining the character of the City of Athens.
