The former downtown bus station in Athens was converted into a first-class, seafood restaurant. AMT teamed up with Lisa Ellis Design to provide designs for the project which won the Historic Athens 2020 Preservation Award for Outstanding Adaptive Reuse.
Charles Morgan, a Destin-based restauranteur with a diverse portfolio of restaurant concepts across Florida, Alabama, and Georgia, owns Chuck’s Fish and FIVE Bar in downtown Athens. He chose the location of the former Union Bus Station, which opened in downtown Athens in 1940 and operated as a hub for numerous bus lines, including Greyhound and Trailways, as well as a small restaurant called the Union Grill. All structural design, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) design and architectural plans (including safety) and drawings were completed by David W. Matheny, AIA, Bret Thurmond, P.E., and Weston Baumgartner, AIA and their teams at Armentrout Matheny Thurmond, P.C. Lisa Ellis Design was hired for the architectural and interior design.
